Isom Clemon Civil Rights Memorial Park
Mobile Civil Rights Story

Hummingbird Ideas partnered with community leaders and historians in Mobile to design and develop the website for
Isom Clemon Civil Rights Memorial Park, an educational website created to preserve and share the city’s civil rights history with future generations. The project was inspired by the recent development of the park on Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Mobile and the park’s dedication to the life, leadership, and legacy of Isom Clemon. Our goal was to create a digital extension of the park—one that visitors could explore before, during, and after their visit to gain a deeper historical context.

The website was intentionally structured as a storytelling experience, guiding users through the interconnected people, places, and events that shaped Mobile’s role in the civil rights movement. We focused on clearly connecting Isom Clemon’s work, his relationship with the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA), and the broader movement along Mobile’s historic avenue. Educational clarity and narrative flow were prioritized to ensure the content was accessible for students, families, educators, and visitors of all ages.

From a design perspective, the site balances historical reverence with modern usability. Clean layouts, thoughtful typography, and purposeful use of imagery create an experience that feels respectful, engaging, and easy to navigate. User experience was a critical consideration, recognizing that many park visitors will access the site on their phones via on-site signage and QR codes. Every design choice was made to support learning without distraction.

Ultimately, the Isom Clemon Civil Rights Memorial Park website serves as a bridge between physical place and digital storytelling. By transforming local history into an interactive, educational resource, the website extends the mission of the park beyond its physical boundaries. The result is a meaningful platform that preserves Mobile’s civil rights legacy, invites exploration, and empowers future generations to understand how the past continues to shape our community today.
